US, World Markets Stay Strong

The Dow Jones Industrial Average had a strong week, surging, the market gained enough momentum to end the week on a respectable note, and once again close above the 17,000 point record set over one month ago.


While the DOW closed down, this week, in heavy trading the markets finally surged above 17,000, the first time in a month after opening the week at 16,760.07.

A dismal Monday gave little hint to the rise that would follow as the DOW hit a stride that moved it steadily upward  throughout the remainder of the week, unfortunately not with enough power to break even and closed the week at 17,001.22 for a net loss of -38.27/-0.22%.

Big winners for the week include Coco-Cola (+0.70/+1.74%) trading with a closing price of $40.88 per share, Microsoft (+0.52/+1.17%) closing at $44.79 per share, Walt Disney Co at $89.28 per share up +0.67/+0.76% and Intel Corp at $34.17 per share up +0.23/+0.68%.

Losers include Visa Inc (-2.33/-1.10%), American Express Co (-0.67/-0.77%).

Active on the DOW include Microsoft Corp in strong trading moved 41.61M shares, Cisco Systems 33.63M shares in moderate trading for a net loss of -0.45%, Intel Corp moved 28.58M shares in light trading for a net gain of 0.68%, General Electric Co, also in light trading moved 28.17M shares for a loss -0.93% to $25.64 per share.

The NASDAQ continued its upward movement with another strong showing and closed up 4538.55 up +6.45/+0.14% with very little fluctuation.

The S&P 500, ran alongside the DOW and NASDAQ, gaining almost all the previous week's loss, fell slightly closing down at 1988.99, with a loss of -0.03/-0.00%.

World Markets

Nikkei 225

The Japanese Nikkei finally recovered and the market soared throughout the week as the uncontrollable spin finally came to a stop. The market gained steadily although not enough to totally recover from the tailspin throughout the past month and in strong gains the Nikkei 225 still closed down at 15, 539.19 with a loss of -47.01/-0.30%. 

Big winners for the week include Mitsui Mining and Steel (+8.00/+2.54%), Nippon Suisan Kaisha (+6.00/2.06%) and Mitsumi Electric Company (+15.00/1.85%).

Losers include Unitika Ltd in light trading moved 27.02M shares to close down at ¥306.10 per share at a loss of -2.17% to close at ¥45.00 per share. Chugai Pharmaceutical down (-115.00/-3.05%), Obayashi down (-24.00/-2.97%).

Movers on the Nikkei Mizuho Financial Group in heavy trading at 115.59M shares at ¥198.50 per share for a net loss of -0.20% and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial, in medium trading at 44.26M share to close up at ¥602.00 per share for a net gain of +0.03%.

FTSE 100

London Markets rallied strong throughout the week beginning the week at 6685.26 and the FTSE 100 moved steadily throughout the week and closed up 6775.25 a net gain of +2.41/+0.04%.

Big winners in the FTSE 100 include Royal Mail PLC (+9.50/+2.16%) Hargreaves Lansdown (+21.00/+1.85%) and Vodofone Group PLC (+3.25/+1.60%).

Losers include Rolls-Royce Holdings (-15.00/-1.45%), Fresnillo PLC (-16.50/-1.76%), and CRH PLC (-22.90/-1.57%).

Active on the FTSE 100 includes Lloyds Banking Group moved in heavy trading  128.37M shares to close at €76.25 up +1.34%, Vodafone Group PLC traded 93.34M shares closing at €205.85 in strong trading with a net gain of +1.60% and Barclays PLC selling at €222.80 in light trading at 40.04M, for a net gain of +0.91%.

Hang Seng Index

The Hong Kong Markets began the week still reeling from the previous month bloodbath and like the Nikkei the Hang Seng market rebounded surging throughout the week and closed up at 25,112.23 with a net of gain of 118.13/0.47%

Index movers on the Hang Seng Index include Hang Lung Properties (+0.80/+3.25%), Ping An Insurance Group (+1.25/1.94%), China Petroleum & (+0.12/+1.58%).

Active trading on the Heng Seng Hong Kong Index includes China Construction Bank at 130.48M shares up slightly to HK$5.89 with a net gain of +1.03%, Industrial and Com trading 147.66M shares, closing at HDK$5.22 with a net gain of +0.77% and Bank of China Ltd in heavy trading moved 251.29M shares closing at HDK$3.67 with a gain of +0.55%.

Losers for the week include China Resources Ltd down (-1.30/-5.58%),Li & Fung Ltd down (-0.48/-4.58%) and Sino Land Co Ltd (-0.22/-1.56%).
