Money News: Deep Chill Misses The Dow; World Markets Steady

The four major US Markets didn't quite feel the freeze as the polar vortex ushered in February temperatures as the annual holiday shopping season, a make a break period for many retailers, launched early.

 

The DOW opened at 17,653.11 and held a daily range of 17,613.20 to 17,664.15 as the markets continued to rebound regaining footing the polar vortex that is effecting the majority of the nation didn't freeze out the DOW or the three Major Indexes.

The DOW continued its daily rally and remained strong enough to keep the DOW steady in the mid 17,000's closing down slightly at 17,634.74 a loss of (-18.05/-0.10%).

The winners for the week include Cisco Systems Inc (+0.65/+2.53%) trading with a closing price of $26.33 per share closing up at (+2.53%). AT&T Inc in light trading moved 17.49M shares closing up at $35.89 per share for a gain of (+0.79%).

Losers for the week included Microsoft, in light trading, moved 23.14M shares closing down at $49.59 per share for a slight loss of (-0.02%) Pfizer Inc, in very light trading moved 15.16M shares, closed at $30.34 per share with a loss of (-0.23%).

Health and Pharmaceutical stocks were active on the DOW throughout the past week   United Health Group Inc closing down at $95.09 with a loss of -0.79%, Merck & Co Inc  closing down at 59.07 per share or a loss of (0.82%). Johnson & Johnson also closed down at 108.16 per share with a net loss of (-0.85%).

The NASDAQ recovered from the slightly fall, rallied and closed up at 4,688.54 with a loss of (+8.40/+0.18%).

The S&P 500 experienced small gains closing slightly up at 2,039.82 for a gain of (+0.49/+0.02%).

Russell 2000 mini experienced mild losses closing slightly lower at 1,173.81 for a loss of (-1.61/-0.14%).

World Markets

The ten most watched world markets Canada's S&P TSX Composite, the Dow Jones Industrial Average of the U.S., Mexico's IPC, London's FTSE 100, CAC 40 of France, Germany's DAX, the SENEX of India, the Hong Kong Hang Seng Index, Japan's Nekkei 225 and the Shanghai Composite closed with a 70/30 gain majority.

Nikkei 225

The Japanese Nikkei 225, after the last two weeks of double digit gains pushing the weak Japanese yen toward a solid road to recovery, rallied fighting the past week's loss with a double digit gain closing at 17,490.83 with gain of (+98.04/+0.56%). 

Gainers for the week include Sekisui House Ltd (+84.00/+5.65%), Alps Electric co Ltd   (+108.00/+5.02%), Taiyo Yuden (+62.00/+4.73%) and Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co Ltd (+13.00/+4.45%),

Losers include Yokogawa Electric Corp (-55.00/-3.47%), JGC Corp (-94.00/-3.26%), Tokyo Electron Ltd (-246.00/-3.10%) and Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd (-20.00/-3.02%).

Movers on the Nikkei include Mizuho Financial Group moved 114.44M shares in heavy trading closing up at ¥204.40 for a gain of (+0.15%), Unitika Ltd in strong trading moved 79.78M shares and closed up at ¥52.00 per share for a gain of (+1.96) and Shinsei Bank, Ltd in light trading at 41.15M shares to closed down at ¥223.00 per share for a net loss of (-1.76%).

FTSE 100

London Markets, in moderate trading, mirrored the European Markets and managed to gain slightly closing up at 6654.37 with a gain of (+18.92/+0.29%).

Big winners in the FTSE 100 include Aggreko PLC (+52.00/+3.37%), Retrofac Ltd (+28.00/+2.49%), Aberdeen Asset Management PLC (+8.70/+2.01%) Tesco PLC (+3.80/+1.99%).

Losers include Intertek Group PLC (-77.35/-2.82%), AstraZeneca PLC (-81.22/-1.72%), SABMiller PLC (-56.00/-1.58%) and Weir PLC (-26.00/-1.21%).

Active on the FTSE 100 included Lloyds Banking Group moving 55.26M shares continuing its run with a sixth straight week of solid trading and regaining its strength closing slightly up at €76.95 for a gain of +0.37%, Vodafone Group PLC moved 74.86M shares, also riding a sixth week of solid trading closed slightly down at €224.65 with a loss of -0.47% and Tesco PLC moved 31.80M shares closing at €194.95 for a gain of +1.99%.

Hang Seng Index

The Hang Sang Index, always a roller coaster, mirrored the Japanese Nikkei 225 as the three major Asian markets performed solidly with the Hang Seng and the Nekkei both closing up. The Hang Seng closed up at 24,087.38 with double digit gains of (+67.44/+0.28%) while the Shanghai Composite closed slightly lower closed down

Gainers on the Hang Seng Index include China Mengniu Dairy Co Ltd (Hong Kong) (+0.70/+2.35%), MTR Corp Ltd (Hong Kong) (+0.65/+2.09%), Sands China Ltd (+0.90/+1.92%), Tencent Holdings Ltd (+2.20/+1.70%).

Active trading on the Heng Seng Hong Kong Index includes Bank of China Ltd moving, in heavy trading, 350.16M shares closing down HK$3.84 and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Corp also in heavy trading moved 131.93M shares closing down at HDK$5.10 with a loss of (+0.20%).

Losers for the week include Kunlun Energy Co Ltd down (-0.23/-2.47%), PetroChina Co  Ltd (-0.15/-1.70%) and China Life Insurance Co Ltd (-0.25/-1.07%).
