Money News: World Markets Begin New Year Split; DOW Steady; European Down, Asian Divided

The Dow Jones Industrial rang in the New Year on a high note, during abbreviated trading, and closed 2014 just below the 18,000 point all time record after a bullish year that saw record highs hit Wall Street, lower gasoline prices and resurgence in both investor and economic confidence.

 

The DOW opened at 17,823.07and held a daily range of 17,731.30-to-17,951.78.

The DOW steady pace wasn't enough to sustain the three other U.S. Markets and remained constant closing up at 17,832.99 (+9.92/+0.06%).

The Gainers for the week include Visa Inc (+2.74/+1.05%) with a closing price of $264.94 per share, International Business Machine Corp (+1.66/+1.03%) with a closing price of $162.10, AT&T Inc (+0.34/+1.02%) with a closing price of $33.93 and Merck & Co Inc (+0.51/+0.90%) with a closing price of $57.30.

Losers for the week Home Depot Inc closing at $103.46 per share down (-$1.49/-1.42%), Nike Inc closing down at $95.20 with a loss of (-0.95/-0.99%), Cisco Systems Inc also closed down at $27.60 for a loss of (-0.22/-0.79%) and the General Electric Co closing down at $25.09 per share for a loss of (-0.18/-0.71%)

Active for the week included Intel Corp, moved 18.84M shares in light trading to closing up at $36.35 per share with a gain of (+0.14%) and Microsoft Corp in medium trading moved 21.76M shares, closed up at $47.74 per share with a gain of (+0.58%).

The NASDAQ, along with the three other U.S. Markets, rang in the New Year down at 4,726.81 with a loss of (-9.24/-0.20%).

The S&P 500 also hit the skids and closed down at 2,058.20 for a loss of (-8.35/-0.69%).

Russell 2000 mini sustained mild losses closing down at 1,204.70 for a loss of (-8.35/-0.69%).

World Markets

The ten most watched world markets the Dow Jones Industrial Average of the U.S., Hong Kong Hang Seng and the Shanghai Composite, SENEX of India, Canada's S&P TSX Composite all closed up while the other three U.S. Markets, S&P500, NASDAQ and Russell 2000 Mini, the most watched European Markets, CAC 40 of France, London's FTSE 100, Germany's DAX,  the Japan's Nikkei 225  and Mexico's IPC all closed down.

Nikkei 225

The Japanese Nikkei 225, limped into 2015 with a heavy triple digit loss, to close down at 17,450.77 for a loss of (-279.07/-1.57%). 

Gainers for the week include Toray Industries Inc  (+34.90/+3.7%), Nippon Kayaku Co Ltd (+36.00/+2.43%), Nichirei Corp   (+10.00/+1.85%), Shiseido Co Ltd (+21.00/+1.25%).

Losers include Pioneer Corporation (-10.00/-4.13%), Tosoh Corp (-25.00/-4.09%), Sumco Corp  (-70.00/-3.85%) and Taiyo Yuden (-45.00/-3.06%).

Movers on the Nikkei include Mizuho Financial Group Inc, in a fourth straight week of strong trading, moved 95.49M shares and closed slightly down at ¥202.80 for a loss of (-0.15%), Tokyo Electric Power Co Inc in strong trading moved 38.68M shares to close down at ¥482.00 (-1.98%).

FTSE 100

London Markets, in an abbreviated Holiday trading week, tumbled sustaining a double digit loss closing down at 6547.80 with a loss of (-18.29/-0.28%).

Gainers in the FTSE 100 include TUIJ (+22.00/+2.13%), Sports Direct International PLC (+12.50/+1.76%), Weir Group PLC (+27.00/+1.46%), TUI AG (+14.00/+1.31%).

Losers include Coco-cola HBC AG (-41.00/-3.34%), Barratt Developments PLC (-11.30/-2.40%), Smith & Nephew PLC (-26.00/-2.19%) and Taylor Wimpey PLC (-2.90/-2.10%).

Active on the FTSE 100 included Lloyds Banking Group moving 42.45M shares in strong trading roared back in an abbreviated trading week to close up at €76.01 for a gain of (+0.25).

Hang Seng Index

The Hang Sang Index, held an abbreviated trading week in observance of the New Year Holiday, and held up the Asian Markets as the Japanese Nikkei 225 tumbled and the Shanghai Composite closed slightly up.

The Hang Seng, closed up at 23,857.82 with strong triple digit gains of (+252.78/+1.07%).

Gainers on the Hang Seng Index include china Overseas Land & Investment Ltd  (Hong Kong) (+1.60/+6.94%), China Resources Land Ltd (Hong Kong) (+1.35/+6.60%), Ping An Insurance Group  (Hong Kong) (+2.85/+3.60%), CITIC Ltd (+0.44/+3.33%).

Active trading on the Heng Seng Hong Kong Index includes China Construction Bank Corp in intense trading moved 263.38M shares to close up at HDK$6.48(+1.73), Bank of China Ltd moving, in intense trading for the sixth consecutive week, 221.80M shares regained its footing and closed up HK$4.43 (+1.37%) and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Corp also in intense trading moved 177.93M shares closing up at HDK$5.76 with a gain of (+1.77%), and PetroChina Co Ltd in moderate trading moved 40.01M shares to close up at HK$8.74 for a gain of (1.63%).

Losers for the week include Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd (Hong Kong) (-1.00/-2.29%) Li & Fung Ltd (Hong Kong) (-0.12/-1.65%), Want Want China Holdings Co Ltd(-0.14/-1.37%), Hengan International Group Co Ltd (-1.05/-1.30%).
